about

This song is about being alienated from the universe and human society. It focuses on co-optation into a system which is indifferent to the humanity of the subject, who becomes a cog in the machine, against their will or who, failing that, is weeded out of the system, which itself is a result of the cold telos of the evolution.

One of the central themes of the album is the question of whether human behaviour and the systems derived from this are merely expressions of a chaotic and hostile universe. This song plays into that theme. It also criticizes the Capitalist Libertarian school of thought championed by such ideologues as Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman. The corruption and authoritarianism that results from monopolisation as a product of de-regulated capitalism and a society based on individual needs regardless of the wider social context is attacked.

Ultimately the only element of hope in this song is that by listening to the small voice of rationalism in one's mind which is suppressed by the persona (ie by discarding emotional investments in ideologies or notions of self/grandeur), one can hope to achieve a better future for oneself and others.

In terms of musical influences this was originally conceived of as a short 2 minute epilogue, inspired by Vangelis's soundtrack for Blade Runner and Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. However using synths gave me more inspiration to turn this into a full blown 5 minute epic. The futuristic music of Mass Effect was also an influence.

lyrics

Lost in an alien world

Somehow I owe it yet it owes me not

Dragging, resistant shackled steps

Burned into the fabric of time

With nothing to lose

I drink from the chalice of Discordia

The pretense of rejoicing in chaos

Brings shallow solace and sadness and damning self defeat Yeah!

Detached and Aristotelean

An artefact of lost hope

Thinking away like clockwork

Fragmented and dispersed

Though it shall always remain

A libertarian for when it suits

A hypocrite when confronted with your own truth

I’d rather be an idealist than a cynic

But in this twilight I just see things in various shades of grey yeah!
